Pre-K Classroom

Our Pre-K classroom has both four year old & five year old children, where each age group has different developmental goals & standards, we base our curriculum on realistic goals for each age group.  

Four Year Old 

Social & Emotional

  • Enjoys new things & ideas
  • Pretend plays as "Mom, Dad" or "Teacher"
  • Creative in make believe play
  • Plays well with other children in groups
  • Can describe things they like & dislike clearly
  • Can explain feelings to adults & other children

Learning, Thinking & Problem Solving

  • Knows their colors, shapes & numbers
  • Can count up to 50
  • Understands timeline; first, second & lastly
  • Remembers parts of a story
  • Draws people with 2 - 4 body parts
  • Can play board & card games
  • Can make guesses what will happen next in a story

Common Four Year Old Goals

  • Begins writing name - can trace easily
  • Learning sight words
  • Recognizes alphabet letters & sounds
  • Can put all clothes on, including shoes & jacket, by themselves
  • Is familiar & follows school routines

Language & Communication

  • Knows basic rules of grammar, uses "he" & "she" correctly
  • Sings songs & recites poems from memory
  • Tells stories
  • Can make up stories involving characters with names

Physical Development

  • Can hops & can stand on one foot
  • Catches, bounces & throws ball
  • Pours & cuts with supervision
  • Can run in race with friends
  • Tries to jump rope & hula hoop
  • Can balance on balance beam

Five Year Old

Social & Emotional

  • Wants to please friends & teachers
  • More likely to agree to rules
  • Likes to sing, dance & act
  • Shows concern for others
  • Aware of genders 
  • Can tell the difference between real & make believe
  • Shows more & more independence

Learning, Thinking & Problem Solving

  • Draws people with 6 or more body parts 
  • Can print numbers & letters
  • Draws shapes & knows more geometrical names such as trapezoid, rhombus, octagon, etc.
  • Knows about everyday items like money & food
  • Understand steps in completing tasks such as making a sandwich, waking up and getting ready for school, etc.

Common Five Year Old Goals

  • Completes weekly homework packets
  • Writes name clearly without tracing
  • Completes beginning math problems
  • Knows & verbalizes all alphabet letters & sounds
  • Can count up to 100
  • Knows days of the week & follows daily routines
  • Comprehends timelines & upcoming events

Language & Communication

  • Speaks clearly
  • Makes up stories involving characters with names,  problems & solutions
  • Uses future tense such as "Grandma will be here tomorrow"
  • Explains actions with why & how

Physical Development

  • Stands on one foot for at least 10 seconds
  • Can skip, hop & do a somersault
  • Uses eating utensils
  • Swings & climbs easily on play equipment
